Post TBSS 4L70e Failure
Sadly, Friday was D-Day for the TBSS transmission. It semi grenaded on my lunch break as it was down shifting in Pottsville on Rt61. The "truck" is completely stock besides the big goofy resonator and muffler removed and a Pypes M-80 welded into place (Thanks Ryan!). I've been babying prior due to weather and I suppose it just had enough.

I wasn't aware of how afraid other TBSS owners are of their stock transmission taking a dump and how often it happens on low mileage trucks. I suppose it lives up to it's name like any GM auto trans with OD :banghead .

As it down shifted I heard a pop and it went out of gear. Coasted to a parking lot and found I had all gears but 3 and OD. I couldn't pull out in those two gears anyway. After cruising slow on some back roads I found I could manually shift into 3 and OD but as soon as I slowed down or came to a stop it would free rev.

Anyway, fortunately when I bought it there was a 5 year/100k warranty on it on top of the 12 month certified pre-own warranty so it's covered. The first person I called when it happened was Ryan to make arrangements for bringing it in and he was more than eager to check it out. I forgot I had the warranty at the time, but next time it happens I'm going with a built one and a stall. I will definitely look for an external cooler in the meantime.

It's at the dealer now and I am getting a rental tomorrow. It's always somethin!

How many miles? I'm assuming they will put a rebuilt GM eplacement in correct? Does GM fix any of the short comings when they reman them?

I had a GM reman, 700r4 put in my 89 chevy pickup and it lasted all of 30k before it too started slipping. That truck had a wopping 230 hp.

I'm surprised it doesn't have a 6l80 in it, that is a killer trans!

I don't think any trucks had the 6Lxx in 2006?

It's nice to see that at least now, everything with a V8 has the stronger 80/90 transmissions in them, car, truck, everything. It just took too dang long.

Just a hair under 70,000 miles. When i called the dealer yesterday and asked about the current situation and what they think, they told me exactly what I thought it was. It was a sprag and apparently a lot of clutches were wiped out. He said the trans was out and on their work bench and that they had some parts for it in stock and will need to order some as well. Sounds like they are just putting a band aid on the problem.

The 700r4's sucked. Great when they worked but they were quick to implode. I have one in my Iroc currently and it's a nightmare. It's cool to manual shift an auto if it has a manual valvebody not when the internals are toast lol.

Nick - it would kick a lot of ass with a 6 speed auto in it. Eskimo is correct, though. They did not put that trans in any of the TBSS's from 06-09. It would take away from the awesome gas mileage through a 4 speed with 4.10s lol...

Oh I forgot to mention that a couple months ago I had Ryan inspect it and also add all new AMSoil fluids to everything (Tcase, diffs, trans, motor) minus brake and power steering fluid. New filter and gasket on the trans as well.

you should ask them if they would install a beast sun shell, and the z pac for the 3-4 clutches .
those items are the weak link. if you could pay for those items extra.

R & R Auto on Rt61, near Renninger's Market. A 2010 red Cobalt was delivered at work from Enterprise. Not acceptable lol.

I'm glad all is working out well for you Chris!!! The service manager from R&R was at the shop last year because of the unhappy customer that bought that new Z06. I told them if I tune the car with 3,000 miles, that it will void the warranty, and their response was "If he is happy with the car after this, we will take care of the warranty. Don't worry about it" Sounded good to me :thumb

Yeah notice how the story stopped there lol.

They are good guys there. I am a little surprised at the customer service since there's a lot of unfriendly CS shops in the area down here.

Post Re: TBSS 4L70e Failure
So yesterday I was all excited because I traded in the stupid Cobalt for a sweet 2010 Chevy Express cargo van. Today I got the call saying the TBSS was done!

On the service sheet it says they removed the trans and disassembled. They found the forward sprag worn forward and bound. It burned the clutches. They replaced the sprag and clutches, and also front pump (which is what caused a whine in the t-case IMO) and pressure control solenoid. They cleaned it up, topped it off and went for a joy ride.

The parts list is really long, who knows if they actually replaced all that stuff or just wrote it off. I am happy with it, though.

They also detailed it for me!
